Coursera: Fundamentals of Visualization with Tableau Review

Fundamentals of Visualization with Tableau is the first course in a new 4-course Visualize Business Data with Tableau specialization offered by UC Davis on Coursera. The course is a short, 4-week intro to the Tableau data visualization software; you'll download and install the free version of Tableau to complete the course. The class has no prerequisites and like most new Coursera courses, graded quizzes require paying for a verified certificate.

The first week of Fundamentals of Tableau starts with what amounts to quick start guide to getting the Tableau software set up and creating your first visualization. It is nice to jump in and see a cool visualization so quickly. The second week spends a little time going deeper into how to make visualizations in  Tableau, while weeks 3 and 4 cover data sources and storytelling. The lectures are generally well done, but there aren't enough of them. Specifically, the course spends too little time explaining how to use Tableau, largely leaving it up to you to experiment and figure it out on your own. Learning by doing is all well and good, but I suspect students will expect more guidance from an organized course.

Fundamentals of Visualization with Tableau is a whirlwind intro to Tableau that has some nice content but suffers from a lack of instruction, with too little time spent teaching the basics. The course would be better served using weeks 3 and 4 to explain the various panes, menus and operations available in Tableau in more detail rather than delving into things like data sources and storytelling. Perhaps the second course in the specialization will give more attention to Tableau nuts and bolts, but as a standalone course, it feels hurried and incomplete.

I give Fundamentals of Visualization with Tableau 2.75 out of 5 stars: Fair.
